2017 proved to be the third year of a global statistical deficit, albeit the gap between world consumption and output reduced to 1.212 mln tonnes compared to 3.083 mln tonnes in 2016. World production showed an increase by 2.117 mln tonnes to 170.806 mln tonnes but still remained lower than the record 172.674 mln tonnes achieved in 2014. In 2017 world consumption showed only a minimum year-on-year growth (0.14%). The world total reached 172.018 mln tonnes, up 0.246 mln tonnes from the previous year. In 2017, the volume of sugar traded internationally increased from 64.733 mln tonnes in the previous year to a new record of 65.865 mln tonnes. During 2017 world prices for sugar declined due to expectations of a significant global surplus in 2017/18. The ISA Daily Price started the year above 20.00 cents/lb, fell to 12.94 cents/lb on 28th June and finished the year at 15.07 cents/lb, resulting in an annual average of 16.02 cents/lb compared to 18.06 cents/lb in 2016.
