Main Features of the World Sugar Economy

The world sugar economy returned a small surplus in 2023, world output exceeds global use by 0.046 mln tonnes. 

World production during 2023 reached 177.929 mln tonnes, up 1.27% on the revised 2022 total of 175.695 mln tonnes.  This year-on-year increase is modest compared to last year’s rise of 9.942 mln tonnes. Output declined in the three years prior to 2022 by an aggregate total of 13.011 mln tonnes, implying that world production in 2023 is still below the 2018 figure of 178.765 mln tonnes.

Global consumption in 2023 was finalised at 177.883 mln tonnes, up 1.074 mln tonnes on last year despite declines in EU, Vietnam and unknown net-trade. Global per capita consumption is estimated at 22.1 kg, down 0.1kg on last year.

World market prices for both raw and white sugar remained strong throughout the year. The highest daily ISA raw sugar price was USD27.14 cents/lb which can be compared to USD20.30 cents/lb during 2022.
